Hip cartilage transplantation
Hip cartilage transplantation is a procedure to rebuild damaged cartilage in the hip joint. A newer procedure developed within the past decade, hip cartilage transplantation allows your surgeon to replace cartilage damaged by hip injuries, hip dysplasia, femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears, osteoarthritis and other conditions with your own or donor cartilage. Baylor Scott & White is one of only a few centers in the US that offer this advanced treatment.
Previous treatments to repair damaged hip cartilage provided short-term relief and didn’t always prevent long-term problems, such as arthritis, from developing. Hip cartilage transplantation offers the benefit of lasting relief while also helping you potentially avoid further joint damage and total hip replacement surgery.

Hip decompression: Spurring a natural healing process
Hip decompression helps many people with avascular necrosis (a condition in which bone tissue dies due to a lack of blood supply) avoid total hip replacement by taking advantage of the body’s natural ability to repair bone damage.
Avascular necrosis of the hip limits blood supply to the femur (thigh bone) where it meets the pelvic bone, causing bone tissue to die. Without treatment, this will not stop, and eventually, the top of the femur can fracture or collapse. If that happens, the only treatment option is hip replacement surgery.
During hip decompression, one or more holes are drilled in the head of the thigh bone, decreasing pressure in the bone, creating new areas for blood vessels to grow and improving blood flow. This type of regenerative medicine allows our orthopedic surgeons to restore and rebuild your natural hip—not replace it.
